In 1936, Lange made this iconic portrait known as “Migrant Mother” while documenting laborers in California. Of the experience, she recounted, “I saw and approached the hungry and desperate mother, as if drawn by a magnet.” The woman in the photograph, Florence Owens Thompson, was a mother of seven children.
