Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez details horrors at migrant facility, denounces threats against her

After visiting a migrant detention center in Texas on Monday, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez detailed horrific conditions at the facility and denounced sexualized threats against her that Border Patrol agents had posted in a secret Facebook group.

As ProPublica reported Monday, members of a Facebook group for current and former Border Patrol agents joked about migrant deaths and posted misogynist memes, including a vulgar photo illustration depicting Ocasio-Cortez engaged in oral sex at an immigrant detention center.

The Facebook group, created in August 2016, has roughly 9,500 members.

Before Ocasio-Cortez and others visited the Texas facility, one member of the Facebook group encouraged agents to hurl a “burrito at these bitches.” Another wrote, “F**k the hoes.” Said another, “There should be no photo ops for these scum buckets.”

Another post in the Facebook group involved a photo illustration of President Trump forcing Ocasio-Cortez’s head toward his crotch, according to ProPublica. The agent who posted the image said, “That’s right bitches. The masses have spoken and today democracy won.”

Ocasio-Cortez denounced the appalling posts on Twitter:

After visiting the Texas facility, Ocasio-Cortez told reporters, “What we saw today was unconscionable.” She also detailed the conditions in a series of tweets, noting that detained women were told to drink water from toilets.

Late Monday, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency confirmed the death in its custody of a 30-year-old Honduran man, Yimi Alexis Balderramos-Torres, according to The Guardian. He was the sixth person to die in ICE custody since October 2018.
