Awkward moment for Ivanka Trump at G20 summit amuses the Internet

By WITW Staff on July 1, 2019

Ivanka Trump’s presence at the G20 summit and at the Korean demilitarized zone with her father has spurred a slew of online parodies, The Guardian reports, with Twitter users poking fun at an awkward encounter at the summit in which she appears to muscle in on a conversation with world leaders.

In a video clip released by the French government from the G20 summit, the president’s daughter and senior White House advisor attempts to join a conversation between French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, International Monetary Fund director Christine Lagarde, and British Prime Minister Theresa May, The Guardian reports.

Twitter reacted, photoshopping her into a range of major moments in history, including the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and the Japanese surrender at the end of the second World War, with tweeters using the hashtag #UnwantedIvanka.

The tweet flurry came after a callout from journalist Erin Ryan.

Ivanka’s presence at the international events also came under fire from New York Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who said it “hurts our diplomatic standing.”
