The rallying cry at President Trump’s first public event since the Mueller investigation concluded was aimed at a leader not even running against him in 2020.
Its target was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the freshman congresswoman from New York. And remarkably, it was even more juvenile than your average Trump rally chant: “A.O.C. Sucks”
The refrain broke out as Donald Trump Jr. whipped up the crowd in advance of his dad’s appearance, assailing Democratic support for Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal as “pretty scary.” That’s when spectators began chanting “A.O.C. Sucks!” to which Trump Jr. responded by nodding and smiling. “You guys, you’re not very nice,” he chided jokingly.
Trump’s rallies are known for their feverish chants, which sometimes target a person the president doesn’t like — one frequently heard during the 2016 presidential campaign was “Lock her up!” aimed at Hillary Clinton. But what was always a fairly simplistic exercise in groupthink seems to have devolved even further with the context-free mantra conjured up for Ocasio-Cortez.
At the very least, it doesn’t employ the misogynistic jabs that other conservatives have hit her with — Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz has a vulgar habit of demeaning her by calling her “adorable” and once told TMZ he’d “swipe right” on bipartisan cooperation if she were involved.
