Doll belonging to Serena Williams’ daughter becomes unexpected star of the Australian Open

January 17, 2019

While tennis superstar Serena Williams is getting her share of headlines during her current trip to Australia, so is her daughter Olympia’s doll, Qai Qai.

The doll, which already has more than 89,000 followers on Instagram, was also a topic of conversation during Williams’ post-match press conference on Tuesday.

“I wanted her to have a black doll,” Williams told reporters, speaking about her one-year-old daughter with husband Alexis Ohanian.“Growing up, I didn’t have that many opportunities to have black dolls. And I was just thinking, like, I want her first doll to be black. And her heritage, obviously she’s mixed, she’s Caucasian and black, but I feel like that was her first doll and I said her second doll would be Caucasian.”

“I definitely want to always teach her love and teach her just basic human … that humans should always have love for each other, no matter what color they are.”

Reminiscing too about her last visit to Australia, Williams spoke sweetly of how Olympia was actually with her on court when she won in 2017, while pregnant. “It’s kind of weird walking on, by myself this time, but it feels good.”
