Banana Republic’s RBG ‘dissent’ necklace sold out before it went on sale

Reissues of a Banana Republic necklace made famous by Ruth Bader Ginsburg have flown off the virtual shelves, with pre-orders of the item selling out in just a few hours.

According to ABC, Banana Republic first unveiled the bib necklace in 2012, and the Supreme Court justice subsequently received one in a gift bag handed out at Glamour’s “Women of the Year” gala. In 2014, during an interview with Katie Couric, Ginsburg showed off the necklace, which she referred to as her “dissenting collar” because “it looks fitting for dissents.” She was, in fact, seen wearing the necklace the day after Trump’s inauguration.

Banana Republic announced last week that it was re-releasing the collar in a limited edition run, and that 50 percent of proceeds would be donated to the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project, which Ginsburg co-founded in 1972 with the goal of advocating for gender equality. Due to the “tremendous” response to the necklace, the retailer later said it is “working to create additional quantities.”

Ginsburg, who at 85 is revered by many as a cultural icon, was recentlydeclared cancer free after undergoing surgery to remove two nodules from her left lung. For the first time in her 25-year career as a Supreme Court justice, she missed a scheduled public session due to her health, but a spokeswoman said that “her recovery from surgery is on track.”
