Popular singer and actress Bette Midler is facing heavy criticism from social media users for disrespecting the presidency and slut-shaming after the 72-year-old shared a picture of a nearly nude Melania Trump to Twitter — complete with the hashtag #FLOTITS. Midler, who just last month was forced to issue an apology for tweeting that “women are the n-world of the world,” courted controversy again on Thursday when she re-posted a picture of the first lady from a 2000 British GQ shoot that she took on then-boyfriend Donald Trump’s private jet. In the photo, Melania wears a futuristic headset complete with a dress whose appearance resembles the hanging part of a chandelier. The dress, Midler joked, did little to conceal that the model was wearing nothing beneath it.

“The dry cleaning bill for the upholstery on Air Force One must be insane. #FLOTITS” wrote Midler.

The mean-spirited dig prompted a hugely negative response from across the internet, as even self-professed fans of the singer slammed her for trying to shame the first lady. Others pointed out that Midler herself was no stranger to risque outfits, and questioned whether she would be comfortable being the object of mockery by other women in the same way as she joked about Melania.

This isn’t the first time Midler has gotten into trouble for slut-shaming. In 2014, Midler feuded with singer Ariana Grande over Twitter and suggested that the younger singer was “[making] a whore out of [herself] to get ahead.”
