A popular local reporter in Cleveland was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds on Monday after her mother reported her missing when she didn’t return from a trip to visit her estranged uncle. Nikki Delamotte, 30, a culture reporter for Cleveland.com, had reportedly only recently reconnected with her uncle, Robert J. Delamotte, 67, after losing touch with him following her parents’ divorce. The two had planned to watch a football game together at a bar near his home in Perrysburg Township, said mother JoAnne Ullman, but Nikki never returned. Robert’s body, dead from a single gunshot wound, was found alongside his niece’s in his trailer home.
“Nikki was trying to reconnect with the small family left and did detective work to find her Uncle Bob on her father’s side,” Ullman told NBC News. “Neither of us had seen him in about 20 years. They connected October 13th after a memorial lunch for my mother and had been talking on the phone.”
“I know Nikki was really excited about reconnecting with her uncle,” added a close friend of the reporter, Brandi McElhatten. “None of us know what happened. We just want to know what happened to our friend.”
Police have yet to outline a motive for the killings, but have said it was unlikely to have been connected to Delamotte’s work as a journalist.
