A kindergarten principal of a school in China has been fired after she opened the new year by performing a pole dancing routine around a flagpole bearing the Chinese national flag in front of her shocked students and their families. Smartphone video of the principal and of a professional adult dancer — who was apparently the principal’s teacher at a pole dancing school — gyrating in the assembly square for the Xinshahui kindergarten in Shenzhen swiftly went viral on Chinese social media for obvious reasons.

“So before our kids got out of kindergarten for the summer, there was 10 days of military ‘activities’ and displays of machine guns and mortars at the door; now the principal has welcomed them back with a strip pole dance on the flagpole bearing the PRC flag. She’s gone nuts,” wrote American writer Michael Standaert, whose two children attend the school. “Who would think this is a good idea,” he wondered in another tweet.

In a statement, the Bao’an education department said that they did not consider it “appropriate to perform pole dancing for children in kindergartens,” writing that the company that owns the kindergarten had been ordered to dismiss the director and issue an apology to parents. An investigation into the matter, they added, had found that the apparent “flag pole” was actually a steel pipe provided by the pole dance company — an important detail since, under Chinese law, public disrespect of the national flag can be punished by up to three years in jail.
