Famed actor Gérard Depardieu, 69, has been accused of raping a 22-year-old actress and author, according to reports from French radio. Depardieu, the star of films such as Jean de Florette and Cyrano de Bergerac, had known the unnamed victim prior to two seperate alleged assaults at one the actor’s Paris residence about a month ago, according to Le Parisien. The rape left the young actress, who had reportedly hoped for professional advice from the movie icon, in shock and “devastated,” her agent told French digital news service BFMTV.
In a statement issued on France Info Radio, Depardieu’s lawyer, Hervé Temime, said that his client had been “shaken” by the allegations and that he denied them “absolutely.” To rape a woman, Temime said, would go against “everything he [Depardieu] is and respects.”
Depardieu, who, over the course of a storied acting career, worked on about 170 different projects, has made a number of unsavory headlines in recent years. In 2011, he publicly urinated in the aisle of a plane after being told he wouldn’t be allowed to use the bathroom prior to takeoff — an incident that he later blamed on prostate problems. He has also attracted attention for a move to Belgium in protest of French tax laws, and his growing public affection for the Russian government.
