‘Gesture of love’

Police officer hailed as a hero for her ‘great gesture of love’ while on duty

An Argentinian police officer who was seen breastfeeding a malnourished baby at a children’s hospital has been hailed for her actions as a hero by users on social media. Officer Celeste Jaqueline Ayala was on duty at Sister Maria Ludovica Children’s Hospital in Buenos Aire when she reportedly noticed the hungry infant and — after seeing that hospital staff were too busy to care for it — decided to take matters into her own hands. Macros Heredia witnessed and captured the moment with a photo that he posted to Facebook, where the image swiftly garnered in excess of 110,000 shares from other users.

“I want to make public this great gesture of love that you had today with that little baby who without knowing you didn’t hesitate and for a moment you fulfilled how if you were her mother,” wrote Heredia, according to a translation from Yahoo News. “You don’t care about filth and smell … things like that don’t [happen] every day.”

Soon, Ayala was trending on Twitter as well as people across the world celebrated her actions — with many pointing out that the heartwarming story should also serve as a rebuke to those who oppose women being allowed to breastfeed in public.

Speaking to the press, Ayala reportedly said that seeing the discomfort of the baby “broke my soul.”

“I noticed that he was hungry, as he was putting his hand into his mouth, so I asked to hug him and breastfeed him,” she recalled. “It was a sad moment … society should be sensitive to the issues affecting children, it cannot keep happening.”

Ayala’s kindness also paid professional dividends, as Cristian Ritondo, vice president of the legislature of Buenos Aires, announced that they had promoted her from officer to sergeant as a reward for her selfless service.
