While actress and humanitarian Meghan Markle continues to comport herself in public with quiet dignity since joining the British royal family in May, the same can’t be said of her relatives back in the U.S.
Entertainment Tonight reports the newly-minted Duchess of Sussex remains upset with her father, Thomas Markle, who continues to grant paid interviews about their estrangement to British news outlets — a baffling strategy for a man who claims he hopes the two will reconcile. “I’d hate to die without speaking to Meghan again,” he told The Mail on Sunday, while also conjecturing wildly about what might happen if he more discreetly sent a card. “I thought about sending it by Priority Mail Express, but the Palace would probably just soak it in water for three days to make sure it doesn’t explode.”
The two have reportedly not spoken in more than two months. “She has not spoken to her father in more than 10 weeks since her wedding and is still hurt by her father, who has both staged the photos and continues to give paid interviews,” an unidentified source told ET.
“The Palace is at a loss of what to do and is re-evaluating options, including a more aggressive strategy to stem the embarrassment caused by Meghan’s dad, half-sister and half-brother,” the same source added.
Meghan’s 53-year-old half-sister, Samantha Markle, weighed in on the occasion of the Duchess’s 37th birthday party on Saturday, too, scotching rumors of a planned face-to-face meeting. “I speak to [Thomas Markle] every day and it’s sad but, no, they have not contacted him,” Samantha told The Sun of Meghan and Prince Harry. “There is no meeting planned, that is PR spin. The PR machines can stop trying to make out she’s making an effort — she is not. This is a heartbreaking time for him and I’m very sad watching my sister ignore him.”
Samantha also marked Meghan’s birthday by sarcastically tweeting at her from her private account to send her father a “belated” birthday card: “Happy Birthday Meg! It would be so lovely and appropriate of you to send DAD a BELATED birthday card for his July 18th @KensingtonRoyal Cheers!”
In spite of the drama, Markle is said to be settling into royal life, looking forward to spending time with the extended family in the Scottish Highlands, and forging ahead with her humanitarian work — another thing that rankles Samantha. “[Humanitarians] work towards resolve and peace,” she told The Sun. “But my sister disposed of the entire family. There is no way to candy coat something so foul.”
