Video of First Lady Melania Trump making a strange face immediately after shaking the hand of Russian President Vladimir Putin has gone viral on social media, as a number of commentators noted that her face appeared to reflexively express disgust or horror at having to touch the ex-KGB strongman, who has ruled Russia with an iron first for the better part of two decades.

“She looks like she just stared into the eyes of evil,” wrote one social media user.

“She’s the only one in the room who understands how dangerous this man actually is,” another remarked.

Contrasted with Melania’s apparent revulsion at having to interact with Putin was her husband, President Donald Trump, who in his own facial expressions and words appeared almost deferential to the Russian president. President Trump’s repeated insistence that Putin had told him that Russia was not interfering with U.S. elections — in clear contradiction with the consensus opinion of all U.S. intelligence agencies — left politicians from both sides of the aisle feeling much like Melania’s facial expressions had implied.

“Today’s press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory,” said Republican U.S. Senator John McCain of Arizona. “The damage inflicted by President Trump’s naivete, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is difficult to calculate.”
