First lady Melania Trump headed down to the Texas border Thursday to visit a facility that’s housing the children of migrants who illegally crossed the southern U.S. border. It’s a noble gesture, to be sure, if not an attempt to clean up what’s become a P.R. nightmare for the White House this week.
But Melania’s wardrobe choice for the first leg of her journey to Texas has only intensified the P.R. nightmare engulfing the Trump administration. She was spotted leaving Washington D.C. wearing an Army green jacket, which was emblazoned with white letters across the back reading, “I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?”
We’re not kidding. Photos were shot by news photographers showing her wearing the jacket as she boarded a plane at Andrews Air Force Base outside the capital. By the time she arrived in Texas, the jacket was gone, but many saw her having worn the garment at all while she was on her way to visit with migrant children as highly offensive. According to The Daily Mail, the jacket is sold by Zara and retails for $39.
This is not the first time Melania’s wardrobe choices for a solemn trip have come under scrutiny. Last August, she took a substantial amount of heat after wearing “storm stilettos” on a trip down to Houston to visit Hurricane Harvey victims, a controversy that famed shoe designer Manolo Blahnik eventually weighed in on.
Not surprisingly, the first lady’s spokesperson tried to downplay the odd wardrobe choice. “It’s a jacket,” Stephanie Grisham said. “There was no hidden message. After today’s important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn’t going to choose to focus on her wardrobe.”
Yeah — good luck with that!
The media did focus on the jacket, given the stunning optics of the whole situation. And the first lady was seen wearing the jacket after returning to Andrews Air Force Base as she made her way from the plane to her motorcade — even though the temperature was above 80 degrees. Within a few hours of the controversy having broken out, everyone learned that there was actually some hidden meaning in the jacket, revealed by the president in an early-evening tweet. He said the slogan on the back of the jacket “refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!”
