Thomas Markle, the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, broke his silence on Monday, a month after his daughter married Prince Harry of England at a wedding that was watched all around the world. Markle missed the wedding due to health problems; he suffered a heart attack, which required surgery, in the days leading up to the royal wedding. He spoke out in an interview on Good Morning Britain.
He was also involved in a mini scandal as the wedding day approached. Markle, 73, admitted he’d taken part in a staged paparazzi photo shoot depicting him brushing up on British culture. Amid the uproar that ensued, Markle suggested he might not attend the wedding in an effort to spare his daughter further embarrassment. Days later, the heart attack hit and Kensington Palace announced he indeed would not be at the wedding. Markle, who seems less than comfortable appearing on camera, talked about having to break the news to Meghan and Harry that he wouldn’t be on hand for the big day.
“Meghan cried,” he recalled. “They both said, ‘Take care of yourself. we’re really worried about you.’ They said the important thing was that I get better.” Markle, like most of the world, ended up watching the royal wedding on television, and saw Prince Charles walk Meghan down the aisle in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. “I wanted to walk my daughter down the aisle. I wanted that moment. But I’m thankful for everything the way it went. I was very proud,” he said. “I was very upset that it wasn’t me but the whole world was watching my daughter. I was very happy about that.”
A trace of regret could be heard in his voice as he reflected on missing the day. “The unfortunate thing is I am now a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history rather than the dad walking her down the aisle,” he said.
Markle also had nice things to say about Harry, and revealed how Meghan broke the news to him that she was dating a prince. “He’s great, he’s an interesting guy, he’s a prince — but my daughter has been a princess since the day she was born.”
He emphasized that the two are very much in love and having a child has always been a dream for Meghan. “She has wanted children for a long time,” Markle said of his daughter when asked about the chances that a royal baby could be on the way. He speculated that a pregnancy could happen sometime “soon.”
Markle also discussed his motivation behind the staged photo shoot that caused such an international ruckus, and got emotional when he admitted the whole thing was a “mistake.”
