‘Hit like a girl’

8-year-old drumming prodigy from Japan performs ‘transcendent’ Led Zeppelin cover

June 15, 2018

An 8-year-old girl from Japan has drawn international acclaim after video of her performing the notoriously technical drum part for Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times” went viral online. In the video, which was originally a submission to the Hit Like a Girl drumming contest, 8-year-old Yoyoka Soma can be seen effortlessly and joyfully jamming in near perfect imitation of legendary Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham’s unique and timeless style.

In an article for Rolling Stone, journalist Hank Shteamer notes that there is a plethora of “cute kid playing drums” videos on the internet — before adding that Soma’s skillful and “transcendent” performance outshines them all, and is worthy of being viewed as the performance of a top musician in her own right. Soma, who cities Bonham as one of the greatest influences on her drumming, has been playing the drums since she was just 2. She currently plays in a band with her family called Kaneaiyoyoka, and videos of her playing from as early as four years old are available to watch on her YouTube page.

When you’re ready to rock, watch Soma’s cover of “Good Times Bad Times” below.
