West Hollywood, California, gave adult film star Stormy Daniels a key to the city on Wednesday to honor the actress’ bravery in coming forward about her affair with President Donald Trump despite “threats to her safety and extreme intimidation from the current Administration.” Daniels, who has fought to release herself from a nondisclosure agreement concerning an alleged sexual encounter she had with Trump just months after Melania Trump gave birth to the couple’s son, Barron, was awarded the key by West Hollywood Mayor John Duran and members of the city council during a ceremony outside the famous Chi Chi La Rue sex shop. West Hollywood, one of the country’s most famous gay neighborhoods, also named May 23rd Stormy Daniels Day in her honor.
At the ceremony, Daniels thanked the people of West Hollywood for their support, saying that “this community has a history of standing up to bullies and speaking truth to power, and I’m so very, very lucky to be a part of it,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. In a statement, the city’s government said that “Stormy Daniels has proven herself to be a profile in courage.”
Trump has denied engaging in an affair with Daniels, but despite previous claims to the contrary has recently admitted to reimbursing his lawyer, Michael Cohen, for a $130,000 payment that was used for the non-disclosure agreement. Cohen, who is currently under scrutiny over payments he allegedly received from the government of Ukraine, a U.S. financial firm linked to a Russian oligarch, and numerous other companies, had previously claimed that he made the payment out of pocket without any reimbursement at all.
