At the age of 17, Vanessa Moreno dropped out of high school after giving birth to her son, Joe Angel. Not surprisingly, she missed out on some things many high school teenagers take for granted — namely going to prom. Last weekend, Vanessa finally got to go to a senior prom — on the arm of her son, who will be graduating soon from Collegiate High School in Corpus Christie, Texas.

“My mom had me at the age of 17 she dropped out of high school to focus on giving me her all. Last night I gave her the prom night she never had,” Joe wrote on Twitter with a couple of photos from the big night.

Joe had actually promised to ask his mother to prom when he was younger, but Vanessa said she thought he would eventually change his mind as he got older. He didn’t. And it melted Vanessa’s heart because it allowed her to experience something she completely missed out on.

“It was a sacrifice that I had made. My sacrifice was to give my children my all. I put everything into him. I push them to become everything they can,” Vanessa told KRISTV, mentioning all of her children. “It was something I felt I had to sacrifice so that I could work and give to my child without anyone else helping me.”

That sacrifice has made an impression on Joe, and he saw the opportunity to bring her to the prom as a way to say thanks for all she’s done. “My mom’s the most important person to me, and and I really love her, and all she’s done for me,” he said.

Vanessa  said the two had fun dancing at the prom and that her son’s gesture “meant the world to me.” But she’s not the only one who’s been touched by the gesture. Joe’s prom photos have been retweeted more than 32,000 times and have racked up almost 200,000 likes.

Social media users showed Vanessa and Joe much love, including one who turned their promo picture into a super cool sketch.
