A missing 16-year-old Pennsylvania girl has been safely returned to her mother 13 days after a 45-year-old married father of four flew her out to Mexico on a one-way trip. Amy Yu, 16, was discovered by authorities unharmed and in good health at a resort near Cancun where she had been staying with Kevin Esterly, 45, with whom authorities said she was having a “secret relationship,” according to The Morning Call.
In early February, Yu’s mother, Miu Luu, discovered that Esterly — who had a daughter near Yu’s age and had known the family since Yu was 7 or 8 years old — had secretly picked up her daughter from her school in the Lehigh Valley area, about a two-and-a-half-hour drive northwest of Philadelphia, at least 10 times by claiming to be her stepfather. Luu confronted Esterly, and the next week Esterly received a visit from police who told her that Luu had demanded he stay away from her. On March 5, Yu disappeared after failing to take her bus to school. Esterly also vanished around the same time, after first reportedly stealing $4,000 from his wife’s bank account.
“I’m waiting and waiting and praying, and I don’t know if they catch [Esterly] or not,” a distraught Luu told ABC News at the time. “His daughter is a friend and just one year younger than Amy. I never thought he would act like that. I know him from the church and I know his family for years.”
Later, it was discovered that Esterly had taken Yu on a one-way flight to Cancun, Mexico, resulting in a frantic search before authorities discovered Esterly and Yu at a Puerto Morelos resort on Saturday. Yu has reportedly been returned to her mother, and Esterly appeared in a Miami-Dade County courtroom Monday morning and agreed to be extradited back to Pennsylvania to face the charge of interfering with the custody of a child, a felony.
Esterly’s wife, Stacey, has said that she argued with her husband and had tried to warn Luu about Esterly’s obsession with Yu. Through her attorney, she told ABC News that she plans to divorce Esterly and that she will fight for full custody of their four daughters.
