‘Nothing to hide’

During Milan Fashion Week, women strip down and put on competing show outside Italy’s biggest church

A group of Italian women made a statement about body positivity during Milan Fashion week by putting on a show of their own outside the Duomo Cathedral, the largest church in Italy. Italian blogger Laura Brioschi and 25 other women of differing shapes and sizes stripped to their underwear despite the cold February weather to put on the #BodyPositiveCatwalk, as each showed off garments that they felt comfortable and beautiful in. The guerilla fashion show followed the lead of similar efforts in New York, where women put on a “Real Catwalk” in Times Square to promote body positivity in response to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show.

In a post in her blog, Love Curvy, Brioschi wrote that the event was meant to give women the chance to publicly celebrate the beauty of their own bodies — and to remind those in attendance that they should feel comfortable in their own skin. “Clothes can hide cellulite, pimples, stretch marks and we have nothing to hide!” she wrote. Among the participants were body positivity activists, other women who just wanted to participate, and even a representative from AIPD, the Association of Italy for People with Down Syndrome.
