An Ohio man and his wife are being investigated for possible child abuse after they allegedly cut off the man’s daughter’s long hair as punishment for getting highlights. The blond highlights were a birthday gift from the teen girl’s mother. In a now viral post on Facebook, Christin Johnson shared pictures of her daughter, Kelsey, taken before and after she visited her father and stepmother for the weekend. In the before photos, Kelsey can be seen sporting long, flowing locks. The after photos show the girl looking distraught after nearly all of her hair had been cut off. The teen’s father and stepmom reportedly inflicted the punishment on the teenager because they disapproved of her highlights.

“This is what my daughter looked like Sunday when I took her home and the other two pics is what happened today before she was brought to me … all over me having highlights put in her hair for her birthday!” wrote Johnson.

The post soon attracted widespread attention as Facebook users began leaving messages of support for Kelsey.

“Kelsey, you are a beautiful young woman. Do not let the actions of these two monsters ruin your confidence. If they cannot accept that you are beautiful and can express yourself in this way, then they do not deserve your consideration. I hope you are feeling loved and supported,” wrote one Facebook user.

According to Fox 8 News, the father and stepmother have been suspended from their jobs as firefighters, and local police are investigating the incident as a case of possible child abuse. Colby Carroll, the police chief for the village of Haskins, told Fox 8, “I’ve been doing this since ‘92, and I’ve never had a case … that’s like this.” For more on the story, watch the video below
