James Damore, the Google software engineer who was fired for writing a controversial memo on the gender gap in tech, is suing the company for allegedly discriminating against white, conservative men.
In August, Damore penned an internal, 10-page memo questioning a number of company diversity initiatives and arguing that the disparity between the disproportionate ratio of male to female engineers at Google — and across the tech industry at large — is attributable to “biological” differences between the genders. The document was widely circulated within the company, and Damore was fired amid a public outcry.
“To suggest a group of our colleagues have traits that make them less biologically suited to that work is offensive and not OK,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said at the time.
According to The Verge, Damore and David Gudeman, a former Google engineer who was reportedly fired for suggesting that a Muslim co-worker was linked to terrorism, have now filed a lawsuit against the company in California’s Santa Clara Superior Court. The suit claims that “employees who expressed views deviating from the majority view at Google on political subjects raised in the workplace and relevant to Google’s employment policies and its business, such as ‘diversity’ hiring policies, ‘bias sensitivity,’ or ‘social justice,’ were/are singled out, mistreated, and systematically punished and terminated from Google, in violation of their legal rights.”
Attorneys for Damore and Gudeman are reportedly seeking to represent other white, conservative men who believe their rights have been violated by the company — which, incidentally, has been accused by the Department of Labor of systemically paying women less than men.
