24-year-old Boeing pilot becomes international sensation on Instagram

Dutch pilot Lindy Kats says that she’s loved flying since she was a child, but that she never thought she’d be able to do it as a career. The young Boeing 717 pilot, who has become an international sensation with an Instagram account that boasts more than 100,000 followers, hopes that she can be an inspiration for other young women who dream of taking to the sky.

“I’ve always loved flying, it was just that I always thought it was quite impossible to be a pilot because it was so difficult and it was so expensive,” said Kats, 24. “If people tell me they are inspired, this is one of the best compliments that I could get. I know how difficult it is if you don’t have any mentors, if you don’t have anyone to ask questions to … If it’s really your dream, then do anything you can in order to make it happen.”

In the male-dominated flight industry, Kats says she does face some pushback — mostly from older passengers.

“Usually they see me first when they get into the plane, as they look towards the cockpit,” Kats said. “And then, occasionally I’ve have someone to look a bit further into the cockpit, to check if there is a male pilot as well around …. I don’t feel different than any of my male colleagues and I hope that my passengers will think the same, that’s basically all I can do.”

She created her Instagram, she revealed to keep in touch with family at home in Holland while she studied in Madrid. “At some point it started growing,” she explained. “People liked my pictures and more people started to follow me.” In the wake of her newfound popularity, Kats said she’s also recently started a YouTube Channel, which covers a variety of topics, including how to tie a double windsor knot (an essential skill for pilots), so she can show people interested in following her footsteps “the typical life of a pilot.” Below, watch her the introductory video for her YouTube channel.
