Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson says that going to sex rehab is unlikely to help disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, since he isn’t a “sex addict” but rather a sex “predator.” Weinstein has been accused of raping at least 3 women and sexually harassing many more.

“He’s an actual predator,” Thompson told BBC News. “He’s dangerous and what he’s done and what he’s doing is criminal.”

Thompson, 58, said that while she hadn’t known about Weinstein’s proclivities, she had experienced similar behavior from numerous other powerful Hollywood men.

“I spent my 20s trying to keep old men’s tongues out of my mouth,” she noted bluntly, adding that having to deal with sexually exploitive and powerful men has “been part of our world, women’s world, since time immemorial.” The current President of the United States, she pointed out, had once bragged about being able to use his power to grope any woman he wanted.

“What we need to start talking about is the crisis in masculinity, the crisis of extreme masculinity, which is this sort of behavior and the fact that it is not only OK, but it also is represented by the most powerful man in the world at the moment,” said Thompson.

Weinstein, meanwhile, has expressed the hope that he’ll get “a second chance” after going to sex rehab, and defended his behavior to reporters by saying that “we all make mistakes.”
