A Change.org petition launched by an LGBTQ activist is asking the makers of the Wonder Woman film to make the superhero bisexual in the sequel to this summer’s box office smash hit. Gianna Collier-Pitts, a 2017 campus ambassador for GLAAD at New York University, launched the petition because she believes that “representation is power.” On the website, she wrote, “Some of you may be thinking that this specificity doesn’t make a difference. But for people like me who rarely see themselves reflected in media, believe me. It does.” Greg Rucka, who writes some of the Wonder Woman comics, actually confirmed last year that Diana is bisexual — given that she actually hails from the women-only island of Themyscira. While it is not explicitly addressed in the comics, Rucka said that Diana had “obviously” been in love and had relationships with other women. This prompted Collier-Pitts to ask for that fact to be represented in the movies as well. “Making Wonder Woman canonically bisexual on the big screen would make her the first openly LGBTQ superhero of any gender from either DC or Marvel’s cinematic universes, and would solidify her place as a true role model for women of all ages and identities,” she added. So far, almost 1,500 people have signed on the petition.
