Manolo Blahnik weighs in on Melania Trump’s shoe choice on way to hurricane zone

Nearly three weeks since first lady Melania Trump set off a controversy by wearing a pair of sky-high stilettos as she boarded Marine One ahead of her visit to the Hurricane Harvey flood zone in Houston, the commotion over the first lady’s wardrobe that day seems to have now come to its logical conclusion. The shoes the first lady sported as she departed for Houston were Manolo Blahniks, and now, the legendary shoe designer is weighing in … because, why not? Everybody else has weighed in — frankly most people had their say before the first lady even touched down in Houston, by which time she’d changed into a pair of sneakers — and it only makes sense for the man whose name is on the shoes that were on the feet of the first lady to provide his perspective.

Harper’s Bazaar convinced Blahnik, who the magazine notes is usually “too busy to concern himself with such stories,” to go on the record about the ruckus.

“I don’t think she’s insensitive,” Blahnik said of the criticism of Trump’s footwear choice. “I think she’s working non-stop to make it work — possibly she was just wearing the shoes she left New York in. Yes, I think probably she could have worn Hunter boots but she was wearing what she was wearing. I’m not good at advising people on what to wear because they wear what they want to.” As Harper’s Bazaar pointed out, he was not about to criticize the first lady for wearing his shoes.

So there you have it. The controversy has come full circle. And Blahnik went on to address another controversy: the designers who have refused to work with Melania since her husband was elected — though he was certain to preface his remarks by declaring that “I don’t give a damn about” politics.
