The parents of a pregnant 13-year-old, who was reportedly raped by her father’s colleague, have asked the Indian Supreme court to grant the child an abortion.
The BBC reports that the girl is 30 weeks pregnant. India only permits abortions after the 20-week mark if the mother’s life is at risk.
The girl’s parents only discovered the pregnancy when they took their child to a doctor because they thought she had grown obese.
“They suspected she had a thyroid problem or some other medical condition because she was gaining weight,” Dr. Nikhil Datar, a Mumbai-based gynecologist who examined the 13-year-old, told the BBC. “The scan showed that she was 27 weeks pregnant so I informed the police.”
If the girl is forced to carry the baby to term, Datar added, there are “definite risks to her health.”
“Her pelvis is not fully developed to carry a baby to full term and she will go through physical and mental trauma if she’s not allowed to abort,” he said.
This case comes just weeks after the family of a 10-year-old rape victim petitioned the court to grant their child an abortion. Their request was denied and the girl, who had allegedly been raped by her uncle, gave birth earlier this month after a C-section.
