Kristen Nicole, a veteran newscaster for Good Day Chicago FOX32, was the focus of a very unwelcome (and unnecessary) controversy, when viewers started writing her to criticize a dress they felt was “too tight” for a woman in the third trimester of her pregnancy.
Nicole addressed the issue head-on in a post on her Facebook page, where she shared several photos of her wearing the same dress over the past year. “If you’re writing to tell me that you’re offended by the sight of my baby bump, don’t hold your breath waiting for a response,” she captioned the photos. “It’s not coming. I wear this dress probably once a month. No one has EVER had a problem with it. Wear it almost 8 months pregnant?? Whoa … disgusting, right? (insert massive eye roll).”
She then specifically called out three people who had e-mailed her, telling them to “use their time better” and thanking the people who have supported and motivated her over the last couple of weeks. “We’re finally in the home stretch! I have had a healthy, comfortable, stress-free pregnancy. My husband, son and I are beyond excited to meet our new addition. Thank you for being a part of our journey!” she added. Her fans flooded the post with messages of support, encouraging her to ignore the detractors. Nicole told Yahoo Style that she started feeling self-conscious about five months into her pregnancy, but was encouraged by colleagues to embrace her baby bump. “It was disheartening to receive those letters,” she said, adding that it was sad that the controversy was taking away from their actual reporting. “We reported on a woman who was shot 12 times in one neighborhood, and in another, on a massive brawl that injured both police officers and citizens,” she said. “My outfit is what you’re taking away from this?”
