Malia Obama has grown up in front of the eyes of America. We’ve seen her mature into a fine young woman, despite being in a fishbowl for the bulk of her most formative years. So, hopefully she’ll forgive us if we can’t get the refrain of this aptly-titled Bruce Springsteen song out of our heads when we see her reaching new milestones.
And on Tuesday, her gap year now behind her, Malia reached another milestone. She set forth on a rite of passage embarked on by many an American teen: The former first daughter showed up for school at Harvard University. Her parents, Barack and Michelle Obama, were seen dropping her off at her dorm room and and looked to be emotional after having said goodbye to their 19-year-old daughter, reports said.
Not surprisingly, Malia’s arrival drew enthusiastic attention from her classmates. Photos and videos emerged online of the former president and first lady accompanying Malia into the dorm. One Twitter user wrote, “My cousin goes to Harvard & he saw @BarackObama & @MichelleObama on move-in day! #Ilovethem”
One photo of Malia making a new acquaintance with a fellow incoming freshman ended up being deleted from Twitter after the snarky comments by the girl who posted it went viral. News photos showed Malia chatting up her new classmates on student move-in day, and a reporter from The Boston Globe asked her for an interview, but she declined, politely saying, “I can’t,” and offering a handshake instead.
Ya know, just a normal college move-in day.
Seems like yesterday that we saw Malia attend her first state dinner at the White House. Her parents likely experienced similar wistful thoughts, and after they left Malia at Harvard, they reportedly did what parents dropping their beloved children at college do: They went out for lunch.
