Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon is reportedly thinking about running against New York governor Andrew Cuomo when he seeks a third term in office next year.

The Telegraph reports that liberal groups have encouraged Nixon, who has been a vocal critic of Cuomo, to throw her hat in the ring. Earlier this year, the actress penned an Op-Ed condemning the governor’s policies on funding public schools. “He … wants to increase the number of privately-run charter schools in New York City by more than 50 percent,” she wrote. “And he has been a loud proponent of private school tax credits, essentially a backdoor voucher system.  These are policies we expect from Betsy DeVos, but from Andrew Cuomo?”

During an appearance on The View in April, Nixon claimed that Cuomo “is shortchanging the children of New York state,” according to Harper’s Baazar.

“He is not against public schools but he doesn’t like to pay for them,” she added.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, a spokesman for the governor said that Cuomo “has the strongest progressive record of any elected official in this country — period — and we look forward to building on that record in the third term.” New York has never elected a woman governor.
