Rihanna meets with French president and first lady in Paris

By WITW Staff on July 27, 2017

Singer Rihanna traveled to Paris on Wednesday for a meeting with French president Emmanuel Macron and first lady Brigitte Macron about global education and health care, two causes at the heart of her charitable organization the Clara Lionel Foundation. Rihanna, given her role as the Global Ambassador for the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), has been especially active on the issue of education for girls in underfunded parts of the world. Earlier this year, she traveled with Global Citizen to Malawi where she witnessed firsthand some of the challenges educators on the ground there face. Following the visit, she’s been outspoken about trying to meet aggressive fundraising goals set by the GPE.

Speaking with reporters outside the Elysee palace in Paris after the meeting, Rihanna said, “We focused on the topic of education from global aspects, and we will make a very big announcement this coming September.” Beyond that, the singer was tight-lipped about what transpired in the meeting. However, she did thank France’s first couple for sitting down with her in a post on Twitter. “Thank you Mr. President @EmmanuelMacron and Madame First Lady for the incredible meeting and passion for global and girls education! ???????? And Macron, in a post on Twitter, indicated that France was ready to “take up this challenge.”

In fact, the meeting seems to have sprung from a tweet Rihanna posted back in June in which she asked France’s new president whether the country would step up to fund education.

And Macron is not the only world leader Rihanna has called on of late. She’s called on Canadian P.M. Justin Trudeau and Argentinian President Mauricio Macri, among others.

Below, watch Rihanna talk with reporters following the meeting.
