Iranian TV host faces major backlash after being photographed drinking beer, not wearing a hijab

Iranian TV host Azadeh Namdari (Twitter).

An Iranian TV host is in hot water after she was photographed drinking a beer and not wearing a hijab while vacationing in Switzerland. Azadeh Namdari is being called a hypocrite by conservatives in Iran, where women are forced to wear a veil to cover their hair. In the past, Namdari has publicly endorsed the idea of compulsory hijab. A photo of her wearing a hijab was once published in Iran’s conservative Vatan-e Emruz newspaper alongside a headline that read, “Thank God, I wear the veil,” according to the BBC.

Outrage erupted this week after photos surfaced on social media showing Namdari sipping a beer sans hijab. SafiaDarya, an activist for gender equality in Iran, posted the images on Twitter assailing the TV host’s “hypocrisy.”

Facing criticism from all directions, Namdari sought to tamp down the controversy by releasing a video explaining herself. In the video, she’s seen wearing a hijab and told her critics that she was sitting among family members and close relatives, in whose company women are not ordinarily required to wear a veil. She reportedly said at the moment a video was was captured, the veil had fallen off her head and onto the ground. Namdari offered no explanation for why she was drinking beer — alcohol consumption is prohibited in Islam. On her Instagram page, Namdari has been posting shots of herself in various places throughout Europe. In each one, she’s shown dutifully wearing a hijab.

But her critics largely refused to accept the explanation she gave insisting that if she’s going to endorse wearing a hijab, her adherence to the veil should be unwavering. At least one person came to her defense, in a Facebook post underneath the video. “It is her life. It is none of our business,” Safiye Safiye wrote, making a very reasonable point.
