Two men have been arrested in the alleged kidnapping, rape, and murder of Celine Dookhran, a 20-year-old Muslim woman of Indian descent who authorities say was subjected to an “honor killing” for having started a relationship with an Arab Muslim man. Just days before her death, Dookhran, whose parents reportedly hadn’t approved of her relationship, had taken to social media to thank God for “everything.”
On Wednesday of last week, Dookhran and a second woman were reportedly kidnapped by masked men who took them to a house in Kingston-upon-Thames in London before raping them both and killing Dookhran. Appearing before Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Monday, a 33-year-old named Mujahid Arshid was charged with murder, attempted murder, and two counts of rape and kidnapping while another man, 28-year-old Vincent Tappu, was charged for kidnapping the women. On Tuesday, the court heard that police had found Dookhran’s body packed into a fridge with a slit throat after the other victim told police about the kidnapping from her hospital bed.
Dookhran, who grew up in London, had been an avid social media user who frequently shared makeup tips and posted about religious holidays. In a Twitter post made days before her death, she reportedly wrote, “Alhamdulillah for everything that’s all I can say.” The word Alhamdulillah is an Arabic phrase meaning “Praise be to God.” On social media, mourners remembered Dookhran as “Such a beautiful, intelligent soul.”
