Filial piety

Man in China has been dressing as his deceased sister for the last 20 years

A Chinese man has been dressing as a woman for the past 20 years to help his mother cope with the death of his sister.

As the BBC reports, the unnamed man’s mother is mentally ill. She was deeply distressed after her daughter died, so the man found an unusual way to comfort her: assuming the guise of his deceased sister.

“She was so happy, so I kept doing it,” the man, who’s believed to be in his 50s, told Pear Video, which first reported the story.

The mother reportedly believes that her daughter has been brought back to life. Her son told Pear Video that he now lives as a woman, and does not own any men’s clothing.

This story of filial devotion has gone viral on China’s Twitter-like platform Weibo. Respecting one’s parents and elders is a deeply important value in Chinese culture, and the man drew widespread praise for his sacrifice. But some have questioned whether his behavior is excessive. (Others have also wondered why the mother is not distraught over the whereabouts of her son.)

“You should be filial,” one user wrote, “but to this extent, it’s going to be hard for people to match.”
