Notorious jewel thief Doris Payne has been arrested again, police outside of Atlanta said on Tuesday. According to a report by WSB-TV in Atlanta, authorities apprehended Payne at a Walmart in suburban Atlanta on Monday after responding to a call alleging a woman had shoplifted some items. According to a police report, Payne allegedly pilfered products from the pharmacy department, the grocery department and the electronics department totaling $86.22 in value. Police booked her and took her mugshot and, according to WSB-TV reporter Tyisha Fernandes, cops said Payne “was a nice lady when they just arrested her, very charismatic.”
Of course, the $86.22 worth of shoplifted booty is a far cry from what Payne used to get away with when she was in her prime. Once upon a time, Payne was a smooth criminal. The crafty thief pulled off jewelry heists that were valued in the tens of thousands of dollars apiece over the decades. Payne’s daring life of crime and charismatic persona made her a legend, and eventually the subject of a documentary film. She’s been arrested a number of times since Women in the World launched a little more than two years ago and we’ve written about her exploits before — she was just nabbed in December for allegedly trying to rip off a $2,000 necklace from a Saks Fifth Avenue. Read here and here to get fully up to speed on the longtime thief who just can’t seem to give up the life.
