Kelly Clarkson is used to being in the spotlight, and dealing with all of the positive and negative attention that being a celebrity can bring. This Fourth of July, Clarkson was the target of a tweet that bluntly informed the singer, “You’re fat.” Clarkson, however, was unfazed. She responded back with a pithy four-word addendum to her critic’s tweet, writing simply: “… and still f**ing awesome.” At the end, she included a cheeky winky face for good measure.

While some people, such as the current President of the United States, seem incapable of enduring even the slightest hint of criticism on social media, Clarkson has mastered the art of letting insults wash off of her without sticking. And her response, it appears, made an impression on the body-shamer — at least enough of one that he later felt the need to delete his own tweet. In the meantime, fans on Twitter gushed over Clarkson’s straightforward and elegant dismissal of her body-shaming critic.

In 2015, Clarkson revealed to Ellen Degeneres that she had been dealing with body shaming comments for much of her life — and especially after she became famous on American Idol.

“I love how people think that’s new — like, ‘Welcome to the past 13 years,’” said Clarkson. Yeah, I was the biggest girl on [American Idol], too. And I wasn’t big, but people would call me big because I was the biggest one on Idol, and I’ve kind of always gotten that.”

“It’s like, you’re just who you are,” the singer added. “We are who we are. Whatever size, and it doesn’t mean that we’re gonna be that forever, that’s the thing. Sometimes we’re more fit. Like especially me, I’m such a creative person that I yo-yo. So, sometimes I’m more fit and I get into kickboxing hardcore. And then sometimes I don’t, and I’m like … I’d rather have wine.”
