NYPD officer, a mother of 3, ‘assassinated’ in brutal ambush attack

Slain NYPD officer Miosotis Familia (NYPD).

During the early-morning hours Wednesday in the Bronx borough of New York City, an on-duty police officer was fatally shot in the head as she sat in her NYPD squad car. Miosotis Familia, 48, a 12-year veteran of the force, was assigned to the anti-crime unit in the 46th precinct. As she sat in the parked car, authorities say Alexander Bonds approached the vehicle and fired a single shot through the window, striking Familia in the head. She was pronounced dead shortly thereafter, and Bonds, who fled the scene, was later killed in a shootout with police. NYPD commissioner James O’Neill said Familia was “assassinated” in an unprovoked attack. Bonds, 34, was on parole after serving time in prison and, police say, the handgun he used to kill Familia had been stolen in 2013, ABC News reported.

Familia’s grieving families members on Wednesday remembered her for her strength of character and her toughness. She was the mother of three, a son and a daughter who are twins and a daughter who is in college, The New York Times reported. According to John Cuello, Familia’s nephew, the job as a police officer was perfectly suited to her personality. “She was a warrior, tell you the truth. She was a fighter, she was tough — and that was the job for her,” he told the Times. He added that toughness was such an indelible part of her persona, that family members never feared for her, even though her job was inherently dangerous.

But she was also remembered for being a loving mother. Claudia Collazo, an in-law, said that her children were always her top priority and that the toughness had another side. “Her smile was as big as her heart,” she said.
