Mika Brzezinski fires back at Trump’s unhinged, sexist Twitter attack

June 30, 2017

Morning Joe hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough have hit back at Donald Trump in response to tweets from the president in which he referred to Brzezinski as “low I.Q. Crazy Mika” and claimed that she had “insisted on joining” him at his Florida golf course while “bleeding badly from a face-lift.” Trump faced heavy criticism from both the left and right in the wake of his apparently misogynistic remarks, as observers were left scrambling to make sense of what the president could possibly have been trying to achieve with his comments.

According to Brzezinski, the tweet was likely a response to a segment on their show in which she noted that Trump had created fake Time magazine covers with his face on them to display at his country clubs. In an Op-Ed in The Washington Post on Friday, Brzezinski and Scarborough denied the president’s claim that Brzezinski had undergone a face-lift and questioned the president’s apparent habit of trying to shame women by criticizing their intelligence and looks.

“Putting aside Mr. Trump’s never-ending obsession with women’s blood, Mika and her face were perfectly intact, as pictures from that night reveal,” they wrote. “And though it is no one’s business, the president’s petulant personal attack against yet another woman’s looks compels us to report that Mika has never had a face-lift.”

“It is disturbing that the president of the United States keeps up his unrelenting assault on women,” they added. “From his menstruation musings about Megyn Kelly, to his fat-shaming treatment of a former Miss Universe, to his braggadocio claims about grabbing women’s genitalia, the 45th president is setting the poorest of standards for our children.”

Adding to the drama, the MSNBC hosts said that top members of the White House had told them the National Enquirer would publish a negative article about them unless they called the president and begged him to drop the issue.

“We ignored their desperate pleas,” they wrote.

After the airing of Morning Joe on Friday, Trump doubled down by tweeting that the show was “FAKE NEWS” and claiming that the Brzezinski and Scarborough had called him to stop the negative National Enquirer piece but that he had refused to.

“Yet another lie.” Scarborough responded through Twitter. “I have texts from your top aides and phone records. Also, those records show I haven’t spoken with you in many months.”

Brzezinski and Scarborough, who are engaged to be married, had previously been criticized during Trump’s election campaign for having too friendly a relationship with the GOP candidate. Just last month, the pair had told Vanity Fair that the president had offered to officiate their wedding and host it at the White House or Mar-a-Lago. But in recent months, the MSNBC hosts had been critical of the president’s policies and character — a move that was perceived by Trump as a personal betrayal, according to a senior administration official.

“He attacks women because he fears women,” said Scarborough on Morning Joe.

“We’re okay,” he added, referring to himself and Brzezinski. “The country’s not.”
