Aspiring model severely wounded in brutal acid attack while celebrating her 21st birthday

A college student and aspiring model out for a drive with her cousin in celebration of her 21st birthday was severely wounded after being doused with acid. Resham Khan has been tweeting about the ordeal as she’s trying to recover from devastating burns, and friends have rallied to help her raise money for what promises to be exorbitant medical costs.

The brazen attack occurred in London on June 21 while Khan and her cousin, Jameel Muhktar, were driving through east London. As Muhktar pulled the car to a stop at a traffic light, an assailant approached the vehicle and threw an unidentified liquid onto Khan through the passenger’s side window, which had been open. The assailant then ran around to the drivers’ side and threw acid onto Muhktar. The acid immediately began to devour their clothing, the car upholstery and their skin.

“The pain was excruciating, I was struggling to close the window,” Khan posted in a thread about the ordeal on Twitter. “My cousin struggled to get us away. I saw my clothes burn in front of me. He put his foot down as we were coming onto a dual carriage way but the pain took over and we crashed. We stripped off in the middle of the road, running around screaming and begging for water.”

Eventually, another motorist drove the two to the hospital, where they’ve been receiving treatment. Police are investigating, but have yet to make an arrest in the case.

Friends of Khan and Muhktar, who was put in a medically-induced coma, have set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for what is expected to be a long and expensive recovery. “Resham is usually a very confident young woman. She was preparing to open her own business over the summer, and had plans to model for Asian bridal, make-up and hair artists,” the page says. “But now she feels as though her identity has been stolen from her, on her 21st birthday.

The GoFundMe page shows photos of Khan, a young, vibrant and happy woman before the attack. It also shows some photos taken at the hospital showing the devastation caused to her skin by the acid.

Amazingly, Khan’s spirit doesn’t seem to be broken. Although she’s expressed bewilderment about the pace at which the police investigation is being conducted, she still has hope in her heart. On Monday, she posted a thank you note on Twitter in response to the outpouring of support she’s received since her story has begun to make news. “I want to make sure that this doesn’t get in the way of life anymore than it already has,” she writes at the end of the note. “I’ll get myself back into work, I’ll look good. I’ll graduate. And things will get better.”
