Speaking during an interview meant to promote her upcoming film The Beguiled, actress Nicole Kidman revealed that she had almost quit acting after becoming pregnant with now 8-year-old daughter, Sunday. Appearing alongside The Beguiled director Sofia Coppola, who recently became the first woman in 56 years to win best director at the Cannes Film Festival, the two stars spoke at length about what it means to be a “woman in Hollywood.”
“I think right now there’s a lot of talk about [women in Hollywood] with Wonder Woman being a big success,” said Coppola. “That’s really exciting, and with our movie getting attention — it’s a female cast, a female story.”
“There’s a shift and there’s definitely some change happening,” added Kidman. “Is it enough? No. But you know we’re all doing what we can, and we’re fortunate to have the opportunities.”
The two women also shared their thoughts on a scene in which Kidman’s character, the headmistress of a girls’ school in the Civil War-era South, gives a sponge bath to a wounded Union soldier played by Colin Farrell.
“It could have gotten really over the top,” Coppola said. “But I love that we really focus in on you taking in his body. She hasn’t been around a man in so long. I think I was the most embarrassed shooting that scene. I’m sitting off camera and I was like, ‘Nicole, now can you wash his inner thigh?’”
Then, after Coppola admitted that she had walked away from directing a live-action remake of famed Hans Christian Andersen tale The Little Mermaid in favor of a different project, Kidman said that she had almost walked away from acting altogether while pregnant with baby Sunday.
“I was like, ‘I’m going to give up acting, I’m done. It’s too much. And the baby and that’s it.” But after talking with her Mom, who encouraged her to “keep your toe in the water” because she would “want that as you get older,” she decided to stay in the game. And in the end, Kidman said, she found that her mom had been right after all.
Kidman has been a guest on the Women in the World stage in the past. In 2015, during a conversation with Tina Brown, Kidman opened up about struggling with her divorce from Tom Cruise, but ultimately moving past that anguish and going on to have success in the wake of their marriage. Watch that highlight from the full conversation below.
