Video shows 4-year-old promising to protect her mom from police after shooting of Philando Castile

By WITW Staff on June 22, 2017

Nearly a year after Diamond Reynolds witnessed the fatal shooting of her boyfriend Philando Castile during a traffic stop in July 2016, heartbreaking video has emerged of Reynolds being comforted by her daughter in the back of a police car as she struggled to make sense of the tragedy that had just transpired. The release of the footage came just a day after police released dashcam footage of Castile’s deadly encounter with officer Jeronimo Yanez and a week after Yanez was acquitted of all charges — including second-degree murder.

In the newly-released video, Reynolds can be seen praying, crying, and screaming in the back of the police car as her daughter begs her to keep quiet.

“Mom, please stop cussing and screaming ’cause I don’t want you to get shooted,” the 4-year-old told her mother. In response to her daughter’s comforting words, Reynolds visibly calms and ask her daughter to kiss her.

“I can keep you safe,” the girl reassures her mother a few seconds later.

Reynolds and her daughter were kept in the back of the police car for nearly an hour after Yanez shot Castille seven times, because, the officer testified, he believed Castille was reaching for a gun when he asked him to present his registration. Later in the video, Reynolds is seen asking her daughter to keep her hands in the air to ensure that police don’t shoot her as well.

“Don’t touch him,” Reynolds tells her daughter. “Will you raise your arms? That’s how you get shot.”
