Over the weekend, a 14-year-old girl was discovered unconscious at the Kul railway station in India. Suffering from extensive bleeding and more than five pelvic fractures, the young woman had been gang-raped by six minors in the village of Lakhochak the night before, police said. Initially treated for her injuries at Lakhisarai Sadar Hospital, she was moved to Patna Medical College — the most respected hospital in the state — when her condition began to deteriorate. Once there, the victim’s family reported she spent more than 14 hours unattended and lying on the floor before media attention surrounding her case forced the administration to act.
In an interview with The Times of India, the young woman, who is now in stable condition, explained that on Friday night she had woken up around midnight to relieve herself outside her house when she was suddenly grabbed from behind and blindfolded. “Someone gagged me from behind and dragged me to the nearby field. There were six [or] seven persons, but I recognized two of them as they are our neighbors,” she said. Her grandfather and brother began a frantic search for the girl on Saturday morning before eventually finding her at Kiul station where she had been laid out on one of the platforms.
Still in immense pain, the girl is receiving ongoing treatment in the orthopedic department of Patna Medical College but was able to make a statement to the police. As of Saturday evening, one of the two boys identified by the victim was arrested and a search for other suspects is ongoing. Watch news coverage of the incident below:
