On Wednesday, police announced that they had arrested all three men believed to be responsible for the gang rape of a 23-year-old mother and the murder of her 8-month-old daughter on May 29 in Gurugram, India.
According to police, the men had been driving a leased Magic van — as opposed to an auto rickshaw as previously reported — when they offered the victim a lift. Due to lack of available public transport, the woman accepted the offer only for the men to drive deep into the Manesar industrial township where they took turns raping the woman and killed the daughter. According to police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar, the baby died from asphyxiation as one of the men held her mouth shut to keep her from crying. After the death of the baby, the men allegedly threw the infant out of the van and onto the concrete road divider before making their escape.
“The accused are not just guilty of rape but also murder of the child and we will not let them get off easily,” said Khirwar.
The three men, identified as Yogender, Amit, and Jaykesh, are between 20 and 25 years of age and had shared a tenement together behind the local village head’s office in Manesar village, authorities said. While police reportedly didn’t begin their investigation until nearly a week after the woman reported the crime, two of the men were said to have panicked and confessed to the village head on Wednesday. According to police, the victim had previously said that she overheard the men bragging about their connection to the village head, and that they had expected him to protect them.
