June 6, 2017

The 9-month-old baby of a young woman who was allegedly gang-raped by three unidentified assailants in an auto rickshaw in Gurgaon, India, has died from head injuries sustained when it was thrown from the moving vehicle. The child’s mother, who is estimated to be 19 or 20 years old, said that she was attacked in the small town located just outside of New Delhi while she was traveling at around midnight on May 29 with her infant daughter. The crime is the latest sensational rape case to rock India.

In her statement to authorities, the mother told police that when she boarded the auto rickshaw, two male passengers began to molest her immediately. When she tried to resist and her daughter began to cry, the men threw the baby out onto the road.

“We are interrogating several people and should be able to progress further in the case today, including making possible arrests,” said Sandeep Khirwar, Gurgaon’s commissioner of police. While the case has been officially registered as a gang-rape and murder, no arrests of the either the two passengers or the driver of the auto rickshaw have been made.
