One of the suitors for Rachel Lindsay, a 31-year-old Texan attorney and The Bachelor franchise’s first black lead, has been identified as a Twitter user who feels that feminists can’t be “pretty” and that Black Lives Matter is a “terrorist group,” according to a report from the International Business Times.
Even before the latest season of The Bachelorette started, it seemed sadly obvious that Lindsay’s race would play an important role in the upcoming season, wrote Amy Zimmerman, a reporter for The Daily Beast. While bloggers frantically worried about the racial diversity of the competition’s pool of contestants, one of Lindsay’s first (white) suitors threw gas on the flames by announcing gleefully, “I’m ready to go black, and I’m never going to go back.”
Other contestants openly bragged about their transphobia in their personal bios — why, or how, that was supposed to impress Lindsay may forever be a mystery — but Lindsay’s most disturbing suitor appears to be Lee Garrett, an aspiring country singer who considers himself to be the only “country boy” in the house.
While Garrett’s onscreen behavior is hardly commendable, Caitlyn Hitt, a reporter for the International Business Times, discovered a darker side of the “country boy” on a Twitter account believed to belong to the aspiring singer. According to Garrett’s purported Twitter handle, the “meninist” movement is his “calling” and “female liberals” should never be trusted. The Twitter account had also shared a petition to register Black Lives Matter as a “terrorist group.”
Perhaps the biggest question is whether ABC knew of Lee’s apparent views before choosing him as a suitor for the franchise’s first black lead. If executives of the network were aware, it’s fair to suggest such a stunt amounts to knowingly instigating racial drama in exchange for higher ratings. ABC has declined to respond to The Daily Beast’s inquiry.
