Five years after surviving a brutal acid attack by her cousin, Mumbai resident Lalita Ben Bansi got married this week. Bansi’s face was severely deformed when her cousin grew enraged during a minor argument in 2012 and doused her with acid. After undergoing 17 surgeries, the now 26-year-old said she moved from Azamgarh to Kalwa in Thane near Mumbai because she was “in need [of] change.” She met her husband, Ravi Shankar, 27, in perhaps the most serendipitous way: During a telephone call made to a wrong number.
“Miracles do happen. Who would have thought an acid attack and 17 surgeries later I would find love?” said Bansi, as she prepared for her wedding reception in Mumbai.
“Shankar taught me to believe in love,” she added. “It is a fresh start.”

Shankar, a CCTV operator and gas station owner, said that he had “liked [Bansi] from the beginning.”
“I had only to convince my mother to accept my choice,” he said. “I had to make Lalita believe that she too had the right to a better life.”
