12-year-old wins MMA fight after choking out opponent twice her age

Last month, news broke that a 12-year-old MMA fighter named Momo would make her debut in Japan against 24-year-old Momoko Yamazaki. The opponents fell within the same weight class, but professional fighters expressed concerns about the dangers of a child engaging in a physical fight with an adult.

Perhaps they need not have worried — about Momo, at least. When the match took place on Saturday, Momo locked Yamazaki in a horrible-sounding “rear-naked choke,” according to the Bleacher Report. Yamazaki lost consciousness, and Momo was declared the winner.

It’s hard to feel good about any of this. A woman was choked, after all, and a kid was placed at risk. But Momo has certainly proved herself a force to be reckoned with.
