French President-elect Emmanuel Macron has taken aim at critics who have suggested that it’s deviant for older women to marry younger men. Speaking with Le Parisien, the 39-year-old former investment banker denounced claims that he was either gay or had married his wife Brigitte, 64, for show.
“If I had been 20 years older than my wife, nobody would have thought for a single second that I couldn’t be [an intimate partner],” he said. “It’s because she is 20 years older than me that lots of people say, ‘This relationship can’t be tenable.'”
As evidence of that fact, one might point to the case of American President Donald Trump — who, like Macron, has a 24-year age differential with his spouse, Melania.
The constant questioning of his relationship, Macron suggested, was the result of people who had “lost their sense of reality” and succumbed to “rampant homophobia” and “misogyny.”
Macron, who has previously said that he “wants to be recognized as a feminist by women,” has also expressed a desire to make the position of France’s first lady more active and politically involved.
