Hit and run

Woman’s disturbing encounter with Iranian morality police caught on tape

My Stealthy Freedom- Facebook

Over the weekend, an anonymous video was posted to the My Stealthy Freedom Facebook page depicting a young woman’s frightening encounter with the morality police in Tehran. Presumably pulled over for not wearing the veil while driving — obligatory for female drivers in Iran — the police took the woman’s documents and, as onlookers filmed, attempted to run her over when she stepped in front of the police vehicle and demanded her papers be returned.

The video lasts only 30 seconds and onlookers can be heard reacting with distress as they watch the young woman risk her life when she begins to argue with the police, moving from the open door of the van around to the front and placing her hands over the hood of the car. Clearly nonplussed, the police pull the van forward knocking her to the ground and dragging the woman until her legs slide under the vehicle. Watch the full video below at My Stealthy Freedom.

Masih Alinejad, the publisher of My Stealthy Freedom and a Women in the World contributor, has been documenting such incidents for years now. Beneath the video, Alinejad posted the account of another woman who said she experienced a similar run-in with morality police “due to my veil.” The woman said the police subjected her to similar intimidation practices until she finally walked away from the situation.
