Gunman called ex-girlfriend during deadly shooting rampage in San Diego

Eyewitness footage of Peter Selis just before he carried out a deadly gun attack in San Diego (YouTube).

On Sunday, 49-year-old Peter Selis killed one person and wounded six others in a mass shooting during a pool party at a San Diego apartment complex. And according The Cut, Selis called his ex-girlfriend while he was in the middle of perpetrating the attack and made her listen to the carnage.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said that Selis was “despondent” over a breakup and wanted his former girlfriend “to listen in as he carried out his rampage.” Selis and his girlfriend had reportedly broken up several days prior to the attack.

The gunman was fatally shot when police arrived on the scene. The incident is being investigated as a hate crime — Selis is white; his victims are all Hispanic or black — but police say that as of now, there is “zero information to indicate that race played a factor in this terrible and horrific crime.” Witnesses said Selis was startlingly calm during the attack. “He had his beer in one hand and his gun in the other,” one witness recalled. Video footage captured by another witness showed Selis reclining on a lounge, pistol in hand, before he opened fire. Watch the video below for more on the story.
